THE OTTAWA BLUES FESTIVAL SHOW WAS GREAT! SO WAS THE NEW YORK SUMMERSTAGE SHOW EXCEPT THAT THE FANS COULDN’T HEAR OUR VOCALS UNTIL THE LAST SONG. FOR SOME “STRANGE” REASON THE SOUNDMAN COULDN’T GET OUR VOCALS LOUD ENOUGH. BUT IT’S ALL-GOOD WE CARRIED ON ANYWAY! NOTHING CAN STOP US!

WE’VE BEEN READING WITH GREAT AMUSEMENT ON VARIOUS INTERNET SITES THAT IN PORTUGUESE, FRENCH AND ITALIAN “MERDA” MEANS, “SH!T”!
ORIGINALLY OUR NAME WAS "BLACK MURDER" WE CHANGED THE SPELLING TO "MERDA"
SO OUR USE OF THE WORD “MERDA” DIDN'T COME FROM PORTUGUESE
, FRENCH OR ITALIAN. IT CAME FROM THE ENGLISH WORD "MURDER". IT'S JUST OUR WAY OF SPELLING THE ENGLISH WORD “MURDER” AND IS STILL PRONOUNCED “MURDER".

BE THAT AS IT MAY
“SH!T” IS USED IN A VARIETY OF WAYS IN AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURE: “YOU NEED TO GET YOUR “SH!T TOGETHER!” “WHAT KIND OF “SH!T” IS THAT?” “WHERE’S MY “SH!T”? “GIVE ME THE REAL “SH!T”! “THAT’S SOME REAL GOOD “SH!T” “I REALLY LIKE YOUR “SH!T!"

LET’S SEE, THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE WAS INTER-RACIAL, THE CHAMBERS BROTHER WERE INTER-RACIAL, IF YOU INCLUDE SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE THEY WERE ALSO INTER-RACIAL!

WHAT ABOUT FUNKADELIC YOU ASK? WE WERE DOING OUR ROCK THANG WHEN THEY WERE STILL PERFORMING AS THE DOO-WOP GROUP THE PARLIAMENTS!

WE SHARED THE STAGE AS BLACK MERDA WITH THE PARLIAMENTS AT LOCAL DETROIT VENUES BEFORE THEY TRANSFORMED THEMSELVES INTO THE FUNKADELICS!

THEIR FIRST RELEASE WAS IN 1970. SO WAS OURS YOU SAY! BUT WE RECORDED A COVER OF JIMI HENDRIX’S “FOXY LADY” IN 1967 AS THE SOUL AGENTS SHORTLY BEFORE WE CHANGE OUR NAME TO BLACK MERDA! THE FIRST COVER OF A JIMI HENDRIX SONG THAT WE KNOW OF!
WE WERE BLACK MERDA IN EVERYTHING BUT NAME: IN STYLE, DRESS, LOOK, ATTITUDE, SOUND AND MUSIC! WHEN WE NAMED OURSELVES BLACK MERDA IN 1968. WE HAD ALREADY BEEN DOING THE ROCK THANG FOR ABOUT A YEAR OR MORE!

There's been some confusion and misinformation circulating about Fugi's relationship to Black Merda. We going to set the record straight once and for all!

Fugi was never the leader nor the frontman for Black Merda! He was never in Black Merda! He was someone we met and befriended who wanted to participate in our style of music which he wasn't doing at that time. So we initiated him into the Black Merda style by doing some tracks for him and a few shows with him.

Originally there was very little information about us or our history So some writers tried to piece together bits of our story as best they could! Some of of it was right and some of it was wrong! The bits about Fugi being in Black Merda or leading Black Merda were wrong!

We have nothing against our boy Fugi!

We just wanted to clear the air for those of you who were under the mistaken impression that he was once in Black Merda or was ever the leader of Black Merda!

There was a Black Merda! before Fugi but no Psych-Funk Fugi before he met Black Merda!

Platinum selling rapper, Ja Rule, has a speeded up sample of Black Merda’s “Lying” (originally written by VC L.Veasey (Veesee) who shared writers credit with Charles and Anthony Hawkins as they did with him on the songs that they wrote on their classic "Long Burn The Fire" album) on his "Exodus" CD! It's the title track and single "Exodus (intro)"
